Communities all over the province are the big winners after a new round of Hosting BC grants that support local, provincial, national and international sporting events.

Ravi Kahlon, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport and Multiculturalism, announced $190,000 in funding for 41 events which will take place throughout the province in the coming months. The grants will help with operating costs for provincial, national and club championships, including the Canada Cup International Field Hockey Tournament in Surrey and the 2018 Little League BC provincials in Trail.

“Hosting BC grants bring so many benefits to British Columbians. They support events which inspire people to volunteer, welcome visitors to our province, and provide a boost to local businesspeople by bringing more customers to their area,” said Kahlon. “All that, and the grants enable people in communities large and small all around the province to enjoy some thrilling athletic competitions.”

Kahlon made the announcement at the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Canadian Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Championship, being held at the Richmond Oval, April 6-8. The event received a Hosting BC grant last fall.

Hosting BC grants are administered by viaSport, B.C.’s lead agency for the development and promotion of sport and physical activity in the province. The Government of British Columbia contributes $50 million annually to sport, including $500,000 for events through Hosting BC grants.

"The diversity of sport organizations and clubs hosting events is a testament to the strength and caliber of our sport system in British Columbia," said Sheila Bouman, CEO of viaSport. "We look forward to supporting these unique sporting events which bring together a community of dedicated athletes, coaches, officials and volunteers from across the province.”

Since 2004, B.C. has been developing a legacy of sport hosting expertise, investing $6.3 million in 1,007 sport events in 94 communities throughout the province.
