District Municipality - Part 3

In her column today - Williams Lake Tribune columnist Diana French calls on WL Council or CRD Director candidates (Areas D + E) to look at the matter of a district municipality.  She notes that two community votes were had on the subject including the last proposal in 1996 and both were defeated by rural voters while approved by City voters - read more here

In BC - there are 51 District Muncipalities with two of those here in the Cariboo-Chilcotin -- 100 Mile House and Wells.

The formation of District Muncipalities with a mandatory vote is regulated by Section 8 of the Local Government Act - view here

Furthermore - I heard from one CRD Area D resident on Facebook yesterday who is just past the City boundary who says he is more interested in the City of Williams Lake election than the one that I am involved in (CRD Electoral Area D election).  He didn't get why he, just past the City border and yet is involved in City life, gets no vote while someone else who owns property in Williams Lake and lives elsewhere gets a vote? While within provincial rules for local elections, I do sympathize with him.  I gave the commitment that, if elected, I would look further into the matter.

While previous City expansion proposals failed with rural voters because they took in too much rural property - I believe inclusion of just Mile 168 RD, Commodore Heights and Douglas Rd could receive favourable consideration because of their relative position to the City of Williams Lake boundary however such a proposal MUST be resident driven for it to be successful, in my opinion but I would be prepared to help residents with information to get the process underway...
