Local Gov't Election changes back on

Yesterday, The Tyee reported that Coralee Oakes, BC Liberal MLA for Cariboo-North and the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development confirmed that local government election law changes, as recommended by the Local Government Election Task Force back in 2010, will be in place in time for the 2014 Election, currently scheduled for November 15th, 2014

I hope one of the changes that the Union of BC Municipalities has asked for:

'Delay implementing a Oct 2014 civic election until 2017'

is profoundly rejected.  This recommendation is frankly self-serving from an organization made of municipal politicians.  We all know that the recommendation to have the next local government election in October of 2014 was pushed by Williams Lake City Councillor Surinderpal Rathor and the reason for this was to allow everyone to have the opportunity to vote for their locally elected officials, given in November, seniors' go away to their 'southern' home in addition to safety issues in November for female candidates

I look forward to seeing what Minister Oakes' ministry puts forward in the Spring of 2014 in terms of amending legislation to the Local Government Act/Community Charter and other applicable provincial legislation
