Union of BC Municipalities President Mary Sjostrom has congratulated Coralee Oakes, MLA for Cariboo North, on her appointment as Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Premier Christy Clark appointed Oakes as part of British Columbia's new cabinet announced today.

"I am so very pleased to welcome my former council colleague to her new responsibilities as Minister," said President Sjostrom.

"Coralee's experience with the business community and local government will help maintain progress on the many active files UBCM is pursuing with the province."

A former two-term Quesnel city councillor, Oakes has served as Executive Director of the Quesnel & District Chamber of Commerce since 1999.  She represented the rural voice of small business on the provincial Small Business Roundtable and Minister's Council on Tourism, and is past-president of the British Columbia Chamber Executives

President Sjostrom also welcomed MLA Linda Reimer's appointment as Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Community, Sport and Cultural Development. Reimer has experience as a city councillor in Coquitlam.

President Sjostrom also acknowledged outgoing Community, Sport and Cultural Development Minister Bill Bennett.  "I want to thank Bill for his considerable contribution to local government," she said.  "His door was always open to UBCM and we wish him well in his new portfolio."
