The North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee, consisting of elected officials from the City of Quesnel and the Cariboo Regional District Northern Directors met in Council Chambers last night to discuss the multi-centre project.
Fundraising efforts to date, including funding from the NDI and the province, are close to $25 million.
“Fundraising efforts are really moving forward and we want to keep the momentum”, says Mayor Mary Sjostrom. “Council believes that building this multi-centre is essential to our community and is dedicated to finding the funds for this project. Council is on board. We need our multi-centre, please support us!”
The North Cariboo Joint Planning Committee is diligently looking into all options available to the project and will meet again on June 25 to discuss the Multi-Centre.
“Thank you to the North Cariboo Multi-Centre Fundraising Committee for their ongoing efforts and dedication to this project,” stated CRD Vice-Chair Ted Armstrong. “It is this type of teamwork, that building communities together is all about. The north Cariboo Regional District Directors feel this is an important project for the future of Quesnel, the north Cariboo and the region as a whole.”
“The Multi-Centre Fundraising Committee is in the midst of a vigorous fundraising campaign and asks that those who do not yet have a piece of the multi-centre, come forward,” says Multi-Centre Fundraising Committee Chair Bernice Heinzelman. “We are not done fundraising yet. We believe in the Multi-Centre and hope that the residents of Quesnel, the North Cariboo and the entire region will get on board to support the project in any way they can.”
The North Cariboo Multi-Centre will be a modern facility designed to replace the 62-year-old arena and aging theatre infrastructure. It will feature a 1,600 seat NHL-sized arena, a 450-seat performing arts theatre and accompanying event and assembly area.

Interesting to see the regional district directors promoting the multi-centre. When the referendum was held almost five years ago the voters in the regional district voted just over 50% against it. This vote was combined with the city for overall approval. Makes you wonder who the regional district directors are representing.

Greetings Anonymous. As the current Director of Electoral Area B, I researched the 2008 Multi-Centre Referendum results and learnt the following:
The results for the multi-centre referendum were totaled from all polling stations throughout the North Cariboo Recreation & Parks / NCRP boundary, including the 4 Electoral Areas (portions of A,B, C and I) and the City of Quesnel. Only the total results were reported, being 2,765 (52%) Yes, and 2,524 (48%) No. Results were not reported by Electoral Area nor by City.
Additionally, residents/property owners were not restricted to vote at a specific polling station so results by polling station or electoral area would not necessarily be meaningful.
One more point worth noting is for the 2008 Local Government Election (the referendum question was asked at the same time), an election was only held in Area B. As such, there was no voting for Electoral Area Directors in Areas A, C, and I as they were acclaimed. This may have influenced the voting pattern too.
