Over the weekend - BC Education Minister George Abbott, under the provisions of Section 172 of the School Act, fired the Board of Education for School District #79 (Cowichan Valley) for failing to submit a balanced budget by June 30th. An official trustee (Surrey Superintendent Mike McKay) has been appointed to manage the affairs of School District #79 until the next school board election which will be held in October of 2014.
Finally - consider this, local governments (including school boards/regional districts) can not run deficits but the "parent" government (Victoria/Ottawa) can do so
