Anti-Homophobia Campaign at Columneetza Senior Secondary runs into opposition

Global-BC reports that students at Columneetza Senior Secondary who were trying to have an anti-homophobia campaign including a video presentation during a student assembly have run into some roadblocks

I find this regretable because having a diverse opinion taught at schools would be in society's better interest and although I do not agree with views expressed by gays and lesbians, I'm prepared as a resident of Williams Lake, British Columbia and Canada to allow them to express that view in our schools to promote a dialogue

The video is here

No wonder why the community is as redneck as it is.....pathetic. Wonder why we are ranked the worst place to live and that its nearly impossible to bring educated persons to this area of the province. "Dont teach em gayness cuz theyll get all gay on ya"...... sad state of affairs if our school board will cave to this lack of sensitivity to other viewpoints and lifestyles.

What are parents teaching their kids? These students wanted to take a stand against bullying and anti-homophobia, and thier parents shut them down!? That is sending a message to their kids saying it is ok to discriminate. Just because these kids wanted to campaign for anti-homophobia does not mean they are all gay, they are just good kids looking out for the best interest of the general public. The parents of that community should take a second look at what they are teaching their kids!

Again i go back to the redneck uneducated mentality. True embarassment and the fact the school board caved over this, whats that showing.?

Good comments guys. I should point out in addition that parents cited the fact that the anti-homophobia week at Columneetza would be a distraction to exams for students and naturally, I disagree. I believe in the students' ability to manage their time effectively.

I also agree that the local school district capitulated prematurely.

The Abbotsford School District is fighting any classroom teaching about gays and lesbians as well and again, I would have thought that society would be a little more progessive and have no fears around a discussion about gays and lesbians but evidently, I'm mistaken
